Why Thermal Vacuum Testing Matters for Small Satellite Programs

As satellite systems continue to shrink in size while increasing in complexity, environmental testing remains one of the most important steps before launch. Small satellites, CubeSats, payloads, and supporting electronics must all operate reliably in the harsh conditions of space, where vacuum and temperature extremes can impact materials, electronics, seals, and overall system performance.

Thermal vacuum testing (TVAC) helps simulate these conditions before deployment.

TVAC systems combine vacuum environments with controlled heating and cooling to recreate the conditions hardware experiences in orbit. These tests help engineers evaluate performance, identify potential failures, and validate hardware before launch.

Common objectives of thermal vacuum testing include:

  • Verifying operation in vacuum conditions
  • Evaluating thermal performance and stability
  • Identifying outgassing or contamination risks
  • Validating component and subsystem reliability
  • Supporting qualification and acceptance testing

For small satellite programs, thermal vacuum testing can be especially important because compact systems often contain tightly integrated electronics, thermal management hardware, batteries, sensors, and communication components operating within limited space and mass constraints.

LACO Technologies designs and manufactures thermal vacuum systems used for satellite and aerospace testing applications. These systems support a range of configurations, from component-level testing to larger integrated assemblies.

In addition to hardware performance testing, TVAC systems are also used for thermal cycling, bake-out, and material evaluation processes supporting aerospace and satellite programs.

As the commercial and research satellite industry continues to grow, reliable environmental testing remains critical to mission success.
