Salt Lake City, UT – LACO Technologies, a leading provider of vacuum and leak testing solutions, celebrates NASA's historic OSIRIS-REx mission, which culminated in the successful return of a sample from the asteroid Bennu on September 24th. The mission carried specialized equipment tested in LACO’s Thermal Vacuum space simulation system, to replicate the extreme environment of space.
Launched in September 2016, OSIRIS-REx embarked on a remarkable journey to reach the asteroid Bennu, gather a sample, and safely transport it back to Earth. The mission aimed to unlock the secrets of our Solar System's earliest history, potentially offering insights into the origin of life.
LACO Technologies played a pivotal role in supporting this groundbreaking mission by designing and building a state-of-the-art vacuum chamber space simulation system for testing the OSIRIS-REx Thermal Emission Spectrometer (OTES). The rigorous testing, including extreme temperatures and high vacuum environment, ensured that this instrument was well-prepared to endure the demanding conditions of space, safeguarding the mission's objectives. OTES identified unique spectral signatures of minerals on Bennu's surface, aiding in the search for minerals containing water and providing insights into the asteroid's physical properties.
As OSIRIS-REx continues to contribute to our understanding of the solar system and planetary defense, LACO Technologies remains committed to supporting scientific endeavors that push the boundaries of human knowledge and inspire future generations of scientists.
